Background Information
Animal Welfare
- Factory farmed animals are crammed together in tightly confined areas. This creates unsanitary conditions which lead to widespread disease and aggressive behavior. Many animals never see sunlight or have their feet touch the ground
-About 25 millions pounds of antibiotics are injected into animals (8x the amount used for humans).
- There are more animals than the land is capable of sustaining.

Biodiversity
- Genetic diversity is reduced because only a few selected breeds are raised
Energy Use
- Industries consume a lot of energy/fuel/gas to transport meat. When we buy locally produced food, we save energy
Global warming
-Millions of pounds of waste is produced by grain-fed livestock on industrial farms and releases massive amounts of methane into the air, a greenhouse gas that contributes to global warming

Health
-Since we consume the antibiotic fed cows, we are becoming more anti-biotic resistant.
- The feeding of artificial hormones to livestock have been associated with health problems of humans.

Pollution
- Waste (bacteria, antibiotic residue, manure) leaks into streams, lakes, oceans, and ground water which destroys aquatic ecosystems and habitats, and contaminates human drinking water. Because of the large concentration on animals in a small area, there is too much manure for the land to absorb so the extra manure is stored in holding tanks which causes a horrible smell and also releases hazardous gases into the air.
